Sleep In Rust

Music by Farewell Helen to a variation on an old Cheshire folk rhyme.

The red earth fractures,

Sunlight weaves in dust.

Quick hare spinning,

Tractors sleep in rust.

Wind folds over,

Shadows eat the pine.

Red fox flashes,

Bleeding out of line.

Wind in the weed,

Hides the leaping hare,

Stars underground,

Breathing in cold air.

Red in the loam,

Lies the silent fox,

Now time will melt,

On the shattered rocks.

Rust in the wheat,

Iron blades will turn;

The Raven flies,

Shadows start to burn.

Gold in the grass,

Leaps the silent hare;

The twisted roots,

Caught in open air

Black feathers fall,

And the raven cries,

Bones in the wood,

Beneath a shattered sky

Cold iron gears,

From seed to teasel

The hunted hide

From the speedy weasel
